There Is Real Honey And Fake Honey – How To Check The Purity Of Honey ?

It important to note that distribution of fake honey is increasing at an alarming rate.

As such, you need to learn to differentiate between pure honey and the fake one, so that next time you visit the grocery store you’ll not buy the fake honey, with the belief that it’s pure organic honey.

Real, pure honey is a bee product, which is also referred to as natural or organic honey.

Conversely, fake honey, or adulterated honey, contains numerous flavors and additives, including molasses, corn syrups, dextrose, and sugar syrups. Based on a test done by GHgeochem,

“If a pure honey has been adulterated with corn syrup, the isotope ratio will fall some way between the two values and hence adulteration will have been proved.”

This is a proof that most honey types that are labelled as pure  contain some addition of corn syrup.

Fortunately, there are a number of tests that you can perform to tell apart fake honey and genuine honey:

1.Physical characteristics

You can differentiate between pure and fake honey based on their physical characteristics.

Here are the most significant physical differences between the two types of honey:

Fake Honey

  • Foams
  • Has rough texture, with lumps
  • Runny and drips easily
  • No smell, or might have a sour smell
  • Easily separates into layers

Pure Honey

  • Never foams
  • Soft texture
  • Thick, trickles in a stream only
  • Has the aroma of honey
  • Doesn’t separate into layers

2. The matched trick

Try to light a matchstick after dipping it into the honey. If the honey is pure, the matchstick will light with ease.

The flame will also continue to burn off the honey. For fake honey, the matchstick won’t light.

3.The Thumb Test:

Put some honey on your thumb. If the honey spreads around or spills, it’s fake. Pure honey will remain intact.

4.The Water Test

A tablespoon of fake honey added to a glass of water gets dissolved. Conversely, pure honey will sink to the bottom of the glass.

5.Apple cider vinegar method

Add 2-3 drops of apple cider vinegar and some water into the honey and then stir. If it foams, then, your honey is fake.

It is very crucial to avoid fake honey for the good of your health. Therefore, master these tricks and you’ll never be tricked again into buying fake honey.
